| Title: Ashes, Ashes, All Fall Down Materials: Canvas (20” x 30”) & Oils I don’t usually do political images, because I don’t think most political issues are simple and one-sided enough to be adequately addressed by a single image. I thought about posting this with no description, but I know that if I do that people will misinterpret it. They’ll misinterpret it anyway, of course. People tell me that when I look at the Middle East what I should see is Good Guys (either Heroic Americans or Oppressed Arabs) fighting to defend themselves against the Bad Guys (either Muslim Fanatics or American Imperialists). I don’t see that. I see - on both sides - fear and pain and anger and xenophobia and pride and hurt and an intricately tangled and far-reaching web of multiple causes, some of which could be called noble and justified, some of which must be called base and self-serving. And death. Lots and lots of pointless death. |
